Essential Skills/Traits:
  • 2+ years of SEN childcare experience
  • Experience working with children on the autism spectrum
  • Friendly, patient, and nurturing approach, particularly when supporting a child with limited verbal communication
  • Energetic and able to keep up with an active child, providing structure by planning engaging activities while also allowing space for spontaneity
  • Vigilant, responsible, and attentive to the child’s safety and wellbeing
  • Willing to actively support language development by describing activities, singing, and encouraging communication
  • Strong communicator who maintains regular, open communication with parents to ensure consistency and collaboration in the child’s support

Main duties/responsibilities
  • Provide consistent supervision to ensure G7’s safety, especially outdoors and in public spaces.
  • Support and encourage G7’s communication development using play, modelling words, repeating phrases, and incorporating music and singing.
  • Plan and implement structured, varied activities to engage G7 physically, mentally, and creatively.
  • Encourage and supervise self-care routines, including dressing, feeding, and other daily tasks, providing guidance and positive reinforcement as needed.
  • Adapt materials and activities to ensure safety and accessibility, for example using appropriate objects for G7 to handle safely.
  • Monitor and manage sensory sensitivities, creating calm and predictable environments to prevent overstimulation.
  • Support G7’s emotional regulation, providing reassurance, calm guidance, and strategies to manage frustration or anxiety.
  • Collaborate with parents and therapists, such as speech and occupational therapists, to reinforce strategies and carry over interventions at home.
  • Encourage outdoor play and physical activity to promote fitness, coordination, and enjoyment of nature.
  • Observe and document progress, reporting relevant information to parents to inform ongoing support and development.
